Do you love numbers? Do you want to combine your analytical and creative thinking? Do you want to work in causal and fun environment? Are you hungry for knowledge?
If the answer to all of these questions is “yes,” then an internship at Maritz Research is your perfect fit! How do I know that? I have a pleasure to intern for Maritz Research this spring. My name is Klaudia Obrzut and I’m a senior studying Honors Marketing (IME) and Management Information Systems. I’m here to tell you how fun market research can be!
What is Market Research and Why is it Important?
Market research is an effort to gather data about customers and their experience to improve existing or to introduce new product/service. Such research can give a client an insight about market needs, size, and competition to make informed decisions for the future. Market research is one of the key factors to maintain competiveness in the market. In another words, a company needs to know how it is being perceived by its customers and how it can improve its position.
How is the Data Gathered?
Maritz is able to provide powerful insights to its clients through collecting data from customer experience surveys. If you ever received an e-mail or a phone call asking about your recent experience with a specific company, chances are it is from Maritz. Most of our work is with “continuous” studies that are many customer satisfaction surveys collected over a long period of time; these are reported to the clients each quarter. Maritz also conducts “ad-hoc” studies, which satisfy a specific need of a client, such as introducing a new product on the market.
What is Your Role as an Intern?
As an intern, every day is different and it will depend on your clients, as every client has a different, unique need. Usually, interns are asked to test programmed surveys for accuracy, create and/or edit Power Point reports for clients, proofread project processes and deliverables, such as questionnaires, reports, and proposals. Your job is very important since you are the person who does the last quality checks before the reports and insights are delivered to the client.
Among many market research firms, the Chicago office of Maritz Research distinguishes itself by being a small company within a very large organization. It has the best of both worlds: causal and fun environment of a smaller firm and the prestigious clients and resources of a bigger firm. “This allows Maritz Chicago to leverage benefits from scale while maintaining nimbleness,” says Marat Fleytilkh, a Research Manager.
The culture at Maritz is very people centric and team oriented. Megan Geyer, current intern from the University of Chicago, says: “Everyone is helping everyone else on projects. You get a sense that people want to help others succeed together. Everyone is very friendly and easy going.” Even more experienced employees at Maritz agree that the culture is truly communal; Alison Clarke, Sr. Project Director, when asked about culture at Maritz responds: “You never feel like you are left hanging out to dry if you are unsure of how to do something.”
From Student to a Student: Personal Reflection
Challenge at every corner, opportunity to work with smart and driven individuals, laughter at silly jokes, and the feeling of being a part of a family are only handful out of many reasons why the internship at Maritz Research is so rich and fulfilling. Maritz cares about me as an intern and presents me with opportunities to apply my knowledge learnt in school and grow as a professional. If you want an internship where you are challenged to work hard and do more than just bring coffee and sort papers, you should consider Maritz Research Internship program.
