A Day in the Life of a ZGiRLS Marketing Intern- Bianca Perry

Who you are working for?
6During my sophomore year, I started working with the ZGiRLS Foundation, because it aligns perfectly with my passion for empowering girls and community building strengths. Thenon-profit startup is a confidence building and mentorship program for adolescent girls in sports. ZGiRLS Curriculum™ has helped over 1,200 young athletes across the country build self-esteem and mental resilience in sports, and more importantly life.

How big is your company?
Former NCAA and Olympians athletes, Jilyne Higgins and Libby Ludlow founded ZGiRLS. Since 2012, dozens of interns, five board members, and two-full times employees have joined our company. In spite of our small team size, our impact on the world is immeasurable!

What’s your title?
I’m an Ambassador Community Captain. It’s a brand new marketing
role that I created alongside the leadership team. My focus is
activating and engaging our Ambassador team of Olympic and
professional athletes. Each individual represents and supports the
organization in unique way. Collectively, they are core to moving the
ball forward for the next generation of girls.

7Can you share more about your day-to-day activities?
Building a nationwide community of all-star athletes takes a mix of
consistent and valuable digital and personal touches. On a daily
basis, I interact with potential and current ZGiRLS ambassadors on our social media channels (@gozgirls) with likes and comments . It is an easy way to casually start conversations as well as make our team members feel special. Beyond social media, I use texting and emailing to ask our ambassadors to
complete activities such as taking over our Instagram story or
participating in a webinar, as they all have committed to a monthly
investment of five to 60 minutes of engagement with our ZGiRLS
network. Once a week the founder and I work one-on-one to develop
strategy, initiatives and evaluate my execution; in the meetings, she
empowers me continue to creative ways of bringing people together.

Can you reflect on your internship? What are you learning?
There was a huge learning curve, because we created the role
together from scratch and started the ambassador program with a
blank slate. It has been rewarding to have autonomy to shape the
future of our ambassador community. First I was tasked with designing
and iterating a scalable process to recruit, activate and engage
athletes. Within five months, I grew the team from 20 inactive
ambassadors to over 30 engaged members of the team, which has
contributed to girls signing up for our Summer Adventure Camp. Being
deeply involved in the movement has led me to realize the power of
mobilizing women and girls make a positive change.

A Day in the Life of a Iyka Enterprises Marketing Intern–Martha Arrizabalo

marthaHello! My name is Martha Arrizabalo and I am currently a Full Time MBA Candidate. This summer quarter, I am interning for Iyka Enterprises, Inc., which is an IT service provider that delivers innovative technology to their clients, such as application developments, software solutions and database services. Iyka Enterprises was founded in 2000 by Ms. Poonam Gupta, who is currently our CEO and President.

I’m working at Iyka Enterprises as Marketing Intern, and I must say that even though I’m an intern, this company has given me the freedom to plan and execute marketing campaigns, and to recommend actions in order to align marketing and sales efforts. One of the things that I enjoy the most of working at Iyka Enterprises is that I work with a multidisciplinary team.

A day at Iyka Enterprises would be difficult to define. During the last month, I worked close to IBM, Cisco and Motorola in order to accomplish a partnership between them and Iyka Enterprises. This process involved studying which solutions are the best fit for Iyka Enterprises, following the application process for each of these companies, and taking and passing the training required.

I’m very happy to say that these partnerships are finally signed and now Iyka has a more robust portfolio of offerings to promote among their clients. One of my goals now is to plan marketing campaigns that reach new clients, promoting our new portfolio. In addition, one of the benefits of partnering with big corporations is that we have marketing resources available to use. Therefore, I have to be aware of these benefits and work with the partners in order to take advantage of the marketing resources, such as online marketing campaigns, unsolicited proposal campaigns, events, etc.

At one of our meetings, where there are leaders from all departments: sales, technical, business solutions, advisory, etc.

Currently, I spend much of time defining the marketing campaigns that we will execute in the short run, and working with the sales team in order to verify the process flow between marketing and sales. I also keep working with partners and our sales and technical team in order to identify those certifications that Iyka Enterprises needs, to be able to promote the offerings required in the market.

I’m extremely happy working at Iyka Enterprises! This is a company that hears their employees and recognizes good ideas. My education and previous experience have given me a competitive advantage, and I’m glad to bring my knowledge into Iyka Enterprises. I also must say that while my internship, I have learned valuable insights about the real business world: I have been involved in meetings with clients, where I have observed the negotiation process. I also have been in sales meetings, where I have learned the difficulties that market is having and how approach them. All these insights have nurtured me professionally, and I’m very thankful to Iyka for giving me the opportunity to obtain valuable business insights that help me to grow professionally.

At the end, when my boss call me and ask me to be in a meeting because she wants to know my opinion about something they are working, is the most rewarding part of my day.

A Day in the Life of the Global Machine Parts Intern- Victoria Michael

victoria 3This Summer I am working as a Marketing Intern for Global Machine Parts. Global Machine Parts is an online B2B parts company who acts as an industrial supplier for various companies involved in manufacturing using CNC machines. We are different from the competition in that we function almost completely online, whereas our competitors use sales representatives as a middleman for their operations. Global Machine Parts is made up of four people, myself included, so we are a rather small operation. However our parent company, JTEKT, has an operation of about 200 employees in the United States.

As the Marketing Intern I am responsible for supplying marketing information to our customer base. My main objective is to construct a weekly email newsletter that goes out to about 7,000 customers. To do this, I use Vertical Response (a newsletter generator) to format content and research to create it. I also use various forms of social media, such as Twitter and LinkedIn, to connect with our customers. It is also required of me to obtain new leads and emails in order to grow our customer base, and in the last year I have grown our list about 250%.

Right now I am also responsible for preparing for IMTS, or the International Machine Tool Show, in Chicago the second week of September. I am required to put together various promotional materials as well as inform and invite clients and new leads to the show. This show is held at McCormick place and is a huge opportunity for Global Machine Parts to make sales and obtain new customers.

This internship has been a great experience for me. First, it provides me a great opportunity to use the knowledge I have gained from DePaul to implement a marketing plan in a real life situation. The company has no other person dedicated to marketing, so I have not only creative liberty but the opportunity to think and come up with new ideas rather than just do whatever someone tells me to do. Also, all my prior experience has been in the consumer market. This job has given me the opportunity to learn about a sector of the market that many other students do not. Also, this company is great because we have the funding/budget of a large company (JTEKT, aforementioned above) with the opportunity to make a big difference as one person on a very small team. I would highly recommend that others seek out a similar internship because it has afforded me experiences I don’t think I could have gotten in a different market.
